Interesting places

The Foresterhouse called Gajówka is located in the heart of the Barycz Valley, near Milicz. It is the gateway to the ornithological reserve "Stawy Milickie" (Milicz Ponds), one of the most valuable natural areas associated with carp breeding, which began in the Middle Ages. Their natural value is compared to such bodies of water as Lake Baikal, Lake Victoria or Lake Titikaka. Over the centuries, an ecosystem has developed around the ponds, which is home to nearly 270 species of birds. No wonder the place is beloved by all nature lovers and, of course, ornithologists.

Gajowka, located at the entrance to the village, is a showpiece of the entire region. There is not a person who, while visiting the Barycz Valley, has not been delighted by the sight of this building. Gajowka hut is one of the oldest, if not the oldest, existing residential building in the Barycz Valley. There is an inscription on one of the beams inside the cottage with the date 1812. Built during the Napoleonic wars ravaging Europe at the time, it has survived many turmoils and, surprisingly, has not been destroyed by either warfare or fire. Its technical condition is deteriorating. Its technical condition is deteriorating, but fortunately steps have been taken to save it. The Milicz Forestry Commission, with a great deal of support from local residents, has secured PLN 1 million for the renovation from the "Most the Most" Foundation. Work will begin in 2024.

Gajowka was built in the traditional half-timbered style of the Barycz Valley - the wooden structure is filled with clay tiles, and the gables of the building have brick infill. Until recently, many such houses could be admired in the area, but the passing of time is merciless to them and unfortunately they are permanently disappearing from the rural landscape.

Gajowka was built by Count Maltzan, the pre-war owner of the Milicz land, for the manager of his forests. After the war, forestry workers with their families lived there. This is probably the reason for its name. In the opinion of residents and supporters, it is magical, even fairytale-like. There is no other place like it in the Barycz Valley.
