Twardogora commune

Twardogora commune

The former market settlement, which was granted town rights by Duke Henry III in 1293, marking the beginning of Twardogóra's history, existed in the area of today's town already in the times of the first rulers of the Piast dynasty, but it was not until the future that it was to experience a period of real prosperity. After many centuries of turbulent history, many interesting monuments have survived to our times, which make the modern Twardogóra attractive. In the 15th century, a defensive building (castle) was built, serving as the seat of the owners of the surrounding landed estates. The property was rebuilt by the representatives of the Oleśnicko-Württemberg dynasty at the beginning of the 18th century into a baroque palace, to which an elaborately decorated entrance gate led and around which elements of the former fortifications and moat have been preserved (currently the building houses a complex of secondary schools). One of the most interesting relics of the old times is the Evangelical Church of the Holy Trinity and Our Lady of Twardogóra, built at the end of the 19th century (on the site of an earlier church), made using the half-timbered technique (characteristic of Silesian sacral architecture).  In its interior, which no longer has a sacral function but serves as a venue for cultural events, one can admire, among other things, a baroque altar and pulpit from the mid-18th century. During a visit to the town, it is also worthwhile to see the twardogórski Market Square with its asymmetrically located Town Hall (the former court and jail building) and 18th and 19th century buildings, as well as the historic Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption of the Faithful, standing on the so-called Upper Square.
